Leopold Stanislaus Stokowski is Carter’s Vanderbilt oldest sibling, as he was born in 1950 and is now 72 years old. He is the son of Anthony Stanislaus Stokowski and Gloria Vanderbilt. His father was one of the most popular conductors in the 20th century and became extremely famous after appearing in the Disney movie Fantasia, in the 1940s. His mother was an American artist, actress, fashion designer, author, and socialite. The two got married in April 1945, despite Leopold being 42 years older than Gloria, but divorced five years after Leopold’s birth.

Leopold is in the landscaping business and owns two companies called Sag Harbor, L.I. and New Ground Gardens LLC.

Leopold got married in late 1996 to Emily J. Goldstein. The couple chose to have a small ceremony attended only by close friends and relatives. The wedding was officiated by Charles S. Edwards and took place in a private house in Wainscott, NY. Similarly to Leopold’s parents, the two have quite a huge age gap. Emily is, in fact, 14 years younger than her husband. The couple had their first son in 1998 and decided to call him Myles. But Myles is not Leopold’s only kid.

Before his wedding with Emily, Leopold was married to Ivy Strick. The two got married in June 1981 and had two children, Aurora and Abra. Carter Vanderbilt Cooper was Anderson Hays Cooper’s youngest sibling, as he came into the world in 1965. He was born to Gloria Vanderbilt and Wyatt Cooper, a famous screenwriter, author, and actor. His parents got married on December 24, 1963. Gloria was not new to marriage as Wyatt was her fourth husband. The wedding did not last and the two divorced in 1978, following Carter’s tragic death by suicide.

Unfortunately, not much is known about Carter except for his death. According to records, on the morning of July 22, 1988, he unexpectedly arrived at his mother’s office on the 14th floor of an NYC apartment. He told his mom he had just broken up with his girlfriend and wanted to move back home. He later proceeded to take a nap, but when he woke up he was in a confused state. He asked his mother several times ‘What’s going on?’ before jumping out of the window.

At the time, Carter was seeing a therapist, who was shocked by the suicide.

Did You Know?

Commenting on his brother’s death, Anderson Hays Cooper said: Any time you lose a loved one, especially when you’re younger, it alters the trajectory of your life. (…) It’s inconceivable to me that my brother died in 1988 and I’ve lived more of my life without him than I have with him. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about what he would be doing, who he would be, and I still think about his death and have questions about it.”
