According to records, on the morning of July 22, 1988, he unexpectedly arrived at his mother’s office on the 14th floor of an NYC apartment. He told his mom he had just broken up with his girlfriend and wanted to move back home. He later proceeded to take a nap, but when he woke up he was in a confused state. He asked his mother several times ‘What’s going on?’ before jumping out of the window.
At the time, Carter was seeing a therapist, who was shocked by the suicide.

Commenting on his brother’s death, Anderson Hays Cooper said: “Any time you lose a loved one, especially when you’re younger, it alters the trajectory of your life. (…) It’s inconceivable to me that my brother died in 1988 and I’ve lived more of my life without him than I have with him. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about what he would be doing, who he would be, and I still think about his death and have questions about it.”
