Tupperware has had a long and interesting history and has been a staple of our kitchens since the 1950’s. Nowadays many of the stylish and retro pieces are highly sought after due to their strong design aesthetic. In this article we’ll be exploring the history of these iconic kitchenware manufacturers, as well as the sought after designs to look out for, what to avoid, and our top picks of the best vintage and antique Tupperware available for purchase.
What to Look for When Purchasing Vintage Tupperware
When you purchase vintage Tupperware, you’ll want to consider the following:
- Make sure your piece matches what was produced at the time. Is the piece congruent with the lines and styles released during each era? Are there standard out terms such as Wondelier or Servalier?
- Make sure the term ‘Tupper’ or ‘Tupperware’ is stamped on the bottom. Alongside this, you should also make sure there’s the two-part identification number on the bottom which all genuine Tupperware products include.
Is Vintage Tupperware Toxic?
We all know that production and safety standards as well as the materials used in yesteryear wouldn’t cut the mustard today, but are vintage Tupperware items toxic? The answer is yes, but not all products. Some Tupperware items have been found to have high levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury.
Tupperware also didn’t remove the potentially harmful substance BPA until 2010, so bear this in mind. In general, it’s best not to use vintage Tupperware for food use; especially microwavable items, and instead enjoy these pieces for their aesthetic value.
Common Tupperware Lines
When purchasing vintage and antique Tupperware products it’s good to have a few terms to research or use to narrow down your search for the perfect piece, here’s a run-down of some of the key Tupperware lines and products.
- Wonderlier Line: This line of products was the first produced by Tupperware in the late 1940s and are exemplified by their bowls with sealable lids which came in a range of appealing colors.
- Bell Tumbler: These tumblers first originated in the late 1940s too but are still produced today and are characterized by their tall, slim shape, with the prominent rim.
- Millionaire Collection: Created in the 1960s, this collection features strong mid-century modern influences with elements such as tapered legs and simple colors. This product line was designed to appeal to the climbers and was heavily influenced by the atomic age.
- Servalier Line: The Servalier line, also called the ‘Astro’ line was created in the 1970s and is most recognizable by its three-dimensional ‘sunburst’ or fan-shaped lids. As they date from the ’70s these pieces most commonly come in earthy and autumnal colors which were indicative of the styles of the era.
- Flat Out!: The Flat Out! line is still in production today and is Tupperwares’ line of collapsible containers designed for storage in small spaces.

Tupperware History
Tupperware’s story begins in 1946 when it was created by Earl Silas Tupper (hence the term Tupperware). The idea was to create kitchenware which could create a tight seal on food products to extend their lifespan. Tupper had created the plastic material needed for this almost a decade previously but it wasn’t until a clever marketing strategy in the 1950’s that the product took off; and thus, the Tupperware Party was born.
Similar to products like Avon, Tupperware Parties gave housewives the chance to make a living while still remaining within a domestic setting. Sales representative Brownie Wise realized the potential of the Tupperware Party and came up with strategies that cemented Tupperwares status as one of the most iconic items of kitchenalia.
Today, Tupperware is sold in over 100 countries.
Tupperware Identification Marks
One thing that makes Tupperware so great for collecting is the detailed product numbers and codes which are featured on all products. This makes collecting sets or replacing missing pieces easy, and can also allow owners to research the history behind their pieces. Alongside this, as mentioned earlier in this article, products marked ‘Tupper’ instead of ‘Tupperware’ are far less common and can be quite valuable.
