Barack Obama is, without a doubt, one of the most famous people in the world. In fact, in 2008, he became the 44th President of the USA and the first African-American to run the country.

Barack was born in Hawaii to Barack Obama Sr. and Stanley Ann Dunham. He was the couple’s only child, but he has eight step-siblings despite this. Unfortunately, he didn’t grow up with any of them except for Maya Soetoro-Ng, with whom he shared some years of his youth.

9. Malik Obama (March 1958 – present)

Malik Obama is Barack Obama’s oldest sibling. He came into the world in 1958 and is currently 64 years old. Malik was born to Barack Obama Sr. and Kezia Obama. He studied accounting at the University of Nairobi and became a successful Kenyan-American businessman.

Malik met Obama only in 1985, but the two became very close. In fact, they both served as best men at each other’s weddings.

Malik now lives in Obama’s ancestral home, in a village of only a few hundred people in the western area of Kenya. Despite this, he is a naturalized US citizen and registered to vote in Maryland.

Malik also tried to work in politics and, in 2013, ran for governor of the Kenyan county of Siaya. His slogan was ‘Obama here, Obama there,’ referring to the presidency of his half-brother overseas. Unfortunately, he received less than 3,000 votes, roughly 140,000 less than the winner.


8. Auma Obama (1960 – present)

Auma Obama was born in 1960 and is Obama’s oldest sister. After elementary school, she attended university in Germany, thanks to a scholarship. Here, she studied German from 1981 to 1987. She then continued her studies at the University of Bayreuth, where she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy.

After graduation, she moved to the UK, where she helped her mother relocate. In 1996, Auma married Ian Manners and later gave birth to Akinyi Manners. Unfortunately, the wedding did not last long, and the two divorced in 2000.

Following her divorce, Auma decided to move back with his child to Kenya, where she worked for five years with CARE International before starting her own charity.

Auma is a member of several organizations ranging from the World Future Council, the board of trustees of the German Reading Foundation, and the advisory board of the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies at the University of Bayreuth.

Barack Obama became famous worldwide after serving as the 44th President of the USA. He was the first African-American President of the country and a member of the Democratic Party.

Obama was born in Honolulu and graduated from Columbia University in 1983. After graduation, he worked as a community organizer for a few years before enrolling in Harvard Law School. Obama was sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2013, and officially left office in 2013.

Following his years as President, Obama remained active in Democratic politics and published a book titled A Promised Land.

Mark Okoth Obama Ndesandjo was born in 1965. His mother, Ruth Nidesand, was an American-born teacher who followed his father to Kenya. Consequently, Mark grew up in Africa and got to know his half-brother Obama only later in life.

Mark lived in China for 12 years and met his wife here, a writer, calligrapher, and musician.

Mark has published a book titled Cultures: My Odyssey of Self-Discovery. Part of the money from the sales was devoted to the Mark Obama Ndesandjo Foundation. This organization aims to promote exchange between Asia, Africa, and America, particularly focusing on disadvantaged children.


5. Abo Obama (1968 – present)

Abo Obama was born in 1968. He is the son of Barack Obama Sr. and Kezia Obama. Abo is very private, and, except for this info, we couldn’t find much about him.


4. David Ndesandjo (1968 – 1987)

David Ndesandjo was one of Obama’s siblings. He was born in 1968 and unfortunately died in 1987 at the young age of 19 years old. Except for this, not much is known about his life.

According to records, David died in a motorbike accident.


3. Maya Soetoro-Ng (August 15, 1970 – present)

Maya was born in 1970 and is currently 52 years old. She and Obama share the same mother, Stanley Ann Dunham. Maya came to the world at Saint Carolus Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Maya and Obama spent several years together in Hawaii and Indonesia during their childhood and are still very close to this day. She is very fond of her half-brother and several times stated that although they lived far apart for long periods, they managed to maintain a deep bond.

While in Indonesia, Maya was homeschooled by her mother. However, from 1981 to 1984, she attended Jakarta International School. She then moved to Hawaii, where she was enrolled in the private Punahou School, from which she graduated in 1988.

In the late 80s, Maya continued her studies, earned a degree from Barnard College of Columbia University, and then obtained an extra two M.A. Despite her many achievements, she did not stop here. In 2006, she received a Ph.D. in international comparative education.

Maya is now working as a faculty specialist for Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution. She also serves as a consultant for the Obama Foundation’s Leaders Program: Asia-Pacific. On top of this, she teaches courses ranging from the History of Peace Movements to Peace Education and Leadership for Social Change.

Maya is also a researcher at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her research is mainly focused on Multicultural and International Education.

Maya is married to Konrad Ng, who has Chinese and Canadian origins.

2. Bernard Obama (1970 – present)

Bernard Obama is one of Obama’s youngest siblings. He was born in 1970 and is now 52 years old. Bernard is married to Lily Achoch, a care worker almost ten years younger than him.

The two got married near Wantage, where Lily lives and works. They opted for a simple ceremony and received a call from the President to congratulate them.

It seems that Barack and Bernard are relatively close as they chatted on the phone after terrorists blew up a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.

Lily and Bernard met in Nairobi in 2004, where Bernard owns a restaurant. The couple now has two children.

George Obama is Barack Obama’s youngest sibling, born in 1982. His parents are Barack Obama Sr. and Jael Otieno, and he’s the author of a book titled Homeland.

George first met his famous brother when he was five years old and only got to see him again in 2006. His father died when he was only six months old, and he was therefore raised by his mother and stepfather, a French aid worker. The two, however, separated when he was 15 years old.

This deeply traumatized George and had severe consequences on his life. Following the divorce, George dropped out of school and started to smoke hashish and drink alcohol. He also got involved in several crimes and was arrested and imprisoned for nine months.

After his release from jail, George decided to change the direction of his life. Inspired by his brother Barack, he chose to live in Nairobi, trying to help the local communities, especially kids in the area, overcome their daily struggles.

George stated: “My brother has risen to be the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Here in Kenya, my aim is to be a leader amongst the poorest people on earth—those who live in the slums.”
