Loonkito, who is now 19 years old, has successfully defended his area for more than ten years. One of the oldest African lions in the wild in Amboseli National Park, he retains the record as the oldest living lion in the world.

He still rules over a sizable pride of females and pups, but he has been living on his own since 2017, when Ambogga, his brother and colleague in arms, died in a territorial battle while he was seriously hurt but survived.

Zenda was born and raised at South Africa’s Johannesburg Zoo, where she remained until 1993. She traveled to Philadelphia in a pride that included two other lionesses, a male lion, and herself. Zenda was temporarily sent to the Columbus Zoo between 2004 and 2006. She was then sent to the Philadelphia Zoo and remained there during her death.

At the Philadelphia Zoo, Zenda was put to death by euthanasia after experiencing a sharp decrease in her mobility and demeanor.
